"Traumatic experiences"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Ophthalmology (Eye Problems)

(as a service user),

I have been a patient in the eye clinic since mid-2019 and most of my experiences in the clinic have been absolutely terrible, to the point where each new appointment or visit fills me with severe anxiety.

I have a complex and painful corneal condition, and the few treatments I have been given only seem to make the problem worse. When I try to assert some control over my treatment pathway I am met with resistance. Little attention is given to the daily pain I am left to endure, it seems as if this is not considered worth addressing. An example of this is the refusal to provide any pain relief even after eye surgery, for which recovery is unimaginably painful.

Medical staff have been repeatedly dismissive and unable to show empathy to me when I am in severe pain and distress. Waiting times between appointments are ludicrous, to the point where I have had many more emergency appointments with whoever is available than my actual treatment team. The only positive aspect of this clinic is the nursing staff, who are very caring and attentive, but they have limited ability to help.
