"Birth of my baby boy in Aberdeen"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care) Inverurie Hospital / Midwifery

(as a service user),

Early June I was admitted to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital at 8pm at night for induction of labour as my waters has broken earlier in the week.

On arrival I was anxious as I had to go into the hospital by myself (partner not allowed in due to covid-19). As soon as I entered the triage ward I was put at easy by a student midwife who explained what would happen during the induction and reassured me that my partner would be allowed in as soon as a bed was available in labour ward. Around 45 minutes later my midwife (Sharon) and her student (Ange) arrived to take me to labour ward. Again they both put me at ease straight away and waited until my partner to come into the hospital before we entered labour ward.

That night my labour was induced. I could not have faulted the midwife or student at all and for what was not the nicest of experiences, they made me feel like I was at the centre of my care and helped me make informed choices.

In the morning the shift changed and I was then cared for by another midwife (Ellen)and her Student (Mollie). Again both of these ladies provided excellent care and helped me to deliver my baby boy by 08.50am. Unfortunately after delivery I took unwell with my blood pressure and needed quite a bit of medical input. Although it was a scary experience for myself and my partner all the staff that came to help me at time made me feel like I was in safe hands. I must also commend the student midwife, as I felt she dealt with the situation very professionally and you would have thought she was a qualified member of staff!

I thereafter spent a few days in Summerfield ward. I would like to thank the staff there for making an extra effort for me as it was my birthday whilst in was in there and they went out of there way to provide me with a birthday cake which was much appreciated.

I also would like thank the Inverurie Community Midwifes who provided me with excellent care whilst I was at home. I continued to have BP issues on discharge and they provided extra visits to monitor this and I felt like they were just at the end of a phone if I needed them at all. An extra special thank you to Community Midwife Sophie, who helped me get my medications sorted out...it took away extra stress that I didn't need at the time!

Thank you to all the midwifes/students that took care of me and my son during labour and our first 10 days after.

Dear babyboy123,

Firstly let me congratulate you on the birth of your son, and for taking the time to send in such lovely feedback.

It is really reassuring to hear that you felt well cared for safe and at ease with the staff even with the restrictions we had to impose for partners due to Covid 19. We thank you for accepting this.

Our students have been such an asset to us during the pandemic and they have really shown us first hand what excellent midwives they will be in what can only be described as exceptional circumstances. Mollie and Ellen will be delighted to know how your felt.

What a lovely touch from the staff on the postnatal wards with the supply of the a birthday cake.

The midwives in Inverurie will also be delighted to receive this and I'll make sure that Sophie knows how much she was appreciated and I will make sure your feedback is shared with the rest of the team.

Thanks

Liz
