"Premature Baby"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Neonatal Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

I wanted to write to anonymously thank Dr McTeir for her support and care.

I think of myself as a reasonably stable individual. I waited till my mid thirties to have my first child. She was born 10 weeks early. During her stay in the NICU, I became a hormonal mess, a shadow of my usual self and completely unreasonable. Dr McTeir was exceedingly understanding and very patient. She had obviously seen this temporary insanity before.

At the time Dr McTeir advised that the ward worked with a psychologist and she gently prodded me to make an appointment. I kept telling myself I was coping but looking back it is quite obvious I wasn't and I should have listened to her suggestion. I still struggle with what happened to my baby even although she is perfectly healthy. There are things people say or adverts on the tv that trigger memories of that time.

The whole team were amazing but Dr McTeir will always be in my thought. She is a credit to her profession and I don't know how I would have got through this difficult period in my life without her.

Dear Wee mum,

Thank you so much for your kind comments on the level of care and support you received while your daughter was in the Neonatal Unit. Having a premature baby who requires neonatal care is a very worrying and stressful time. It is completely normal to think back on difficult days or events during your neonatal journey and still feel emotional.

I will be delighted to pass on your thanks to the Dr McTier and all the staff within the Neonatal Unit.

Best wishes to you, your daughter and all your family

Dear Wee mum

The team at PRM takes very seriously the health of the families, and not just the babies, for whom we care. Dr Mactier is sorry that you felt unable to take up our offer of clinical psychology help at the time of your baby's stay in the neonatal unit, but please be reassured that lots of new mums (and dads) feel this way. Having a premature baby is recognised to be one of the most stressful life experiences.

Sometimes we can arrange clinical psychology support after mums have left the nursery, so if you feel able to get in touch please email: rachel.pyle@ggc.scot.nhs.uk, Dr Mactier will try to facilitate this. Your contact will, of course, be treated in the strictest confidence. Otherwise, we suggest that you talk to your Health visitor or GP who should be able to offer help. Your feelings are very common and help is available.

Best wishes

Patricia Friel
