"My mother being admitted to hospital"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Stroke care (Wards 56 and 68)

(as a relative),

Initially my mother fell out of bed, no balance, GP was great came right away when called although receptionist initially asked was I able to bring my mother to the surgery despite me telling her she could not walk and had not been to the doctors in years.

My mother was then admitted to the QEUH where she initially was in the ARU unit then as there was no beds in the ward she was meant to go into she was taken to level 11 an ortho elective ward. My mother was diagnosed with bad vertigo however also an old stroke was seen in scan. She gradually felt better could manage to walk to the toilet etc when asked could she go home and come back to see the stroke team she was told no, she would go to the bottom of an outpatient list.

My mother spent 7 days waiting a stroke team review which took all of 5 minutes, she did not need any care and was in an ortho ward for 7 nights when she could have freed up bed space and spoke to the stroke team when they could see her. I just feel the system should be better, my mother said the nurses were very nice and all medical staff who seen her however she would of felt better at home and it made more sense.

Hello RobynJenna1,

I'm very sorry to read of your mother's recent admission to hospital. It must have been a very worrying time for you both.

It is reassuring to hear that your mother found that the nursing and medical staff were nice, but you've raised some concerns about other aspects of her care that we'd really like to look into in a bit more detail for you.

With your mother's consent, can you please email me with her name, date of birth and CHI number (if you have it to hand). I can share these details with the service, who will be able to look into the concerns you have raised. You can reach me at Rachel.pyle@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Best wishes,

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

thanks it was a very worrying time indeed even though we have both given years of service caring for others between us. We would just like to highlight hospital stays could be shortened and people are known to recover better in their own environment this was a full week in a ward nothing to do with my mothers issues and we could happily of taken her home and brought her back for stroke team review when they had time 7 days later. Instead patients are told they will be put to the bottom of outpatients lists to be seen if they were to leave prolonging an otherwise unneeded stay.

Many Thanks

Hello Robynjenna1,

Please accept my most sincere apologies for the long delay in getting back to you. I spoke with the service and they have been looking in to this matter further for you. They said:

"Although it is difficult to say without details about the particular circumstances of your mother’s admission, this is not the normal pathway that our patients would follow when being admitted, treated and then discharged. Once any outstanding tests and treatments are completed, patients are usually discharged home with a follow up plan and support if required. We apologise that this was not the case for your mother and take on board your feedback about reducing unnecessary hospital stays. Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us and we hope your mother is continuing to make a good recovery."

Best wishes,

Rachel
