"Our Brother’s treatment"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18)

(as a relative),

All.

We would like to thank all of the teams we met and treated our brother Gerard  from 30th May . Gerard was a patient in Ward 18 and was well looked after, although we did encounter issues in getting through to the ward both via the direct number and via switchboard.

Gerard underwent Surgery with Mr Mukherjee on the 3 June. Mr Mukherjee and his team were first class in explaining the issues and the plans and of course the risk . Mr Mukherjee was honest and helped us to understand everything that was going on . A special mention for attentive and understanding should be given to Staff Nurse Kimberly who looked after us and got us access to see Gerard before the Operation.

Gerard was transferred to ACCU post operations and was very unwell. The team at that point lead by Dr Lucie were again highly attentive and again very communicative and clarified the seriousness of the situation. In Gerard’s more immediate care his named Nurse Ashley / Ashleigh was brilliant, caring, compassionate and so professional when Gerard came from Post Op. Gerard’s one to one nurse on the night shift was Michelle and it was during this point that Gerard deteriorated again Michelle and Dr Lucie were the ultimate in their caring professionalism . Gerard was able to pass away with dignity and his Final Orders again were completed with such understanding and appropriateness.

We would like to thank all of the teams who looked after Gerard in what was unusual circumstances due to Covid 19 and they offered us every kindness and respect.

The Whole Family

Dear Hoops McCann,

Please accept my condolences on your sad loss. It sounds like Gerard received compassionate care and treatment and was afforded a dignified death. This is really important to the staff and they will be truly grateful that you've got in touch at what must be such a difficult time for your family.

The fact that you've mentioned quite a few staff by name tells me that communication with your family must have been good and whilst they would have been a few of the many providing care for Gerard, they have left their mark on your family. We'll make sure they all get to read your kind message.

I'm sorry that you encountered difficulty contacting the ward, I'm unable to comment why that was. I also note that whilst you haven't included it in your feedback above, there seems to have been some difficulties with the death certificate. I'd like to offer an unreserved apology for any distress that this may have caused and would be keen to understand what happened to avoid this happening in the future. If you feel able, could you contact PatientAffairs.Wishaw@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk to provide some finer detail please.

Kind regards

Rick
