"laboured alone"

About: Yeovil District Hospital

I feel very upset after my birthing experience at the hospital, as lovely as the midwifes were I felt like I had not really been listened to. I went in on 31st May for an induction, this all went pretty smoothly. And then next morning around 4AM I woke with some slight pains, nothing too significant but as it went on it progressed and they were becoming more regular and painful as the morning went on. I was beginning to struggle as the morning went on, and asked for pain relief to which I was told I could only really have paracetamol as it was early stages. I was offered to go and have a bath to help ease my discomfort, which I really appreciated. Shortly after returning from the bath the doctors popped in and explained they wouldn't be checking my cervix until about 2:30 when the pesery was due to be taken out. She noted that my contracts were lasting a little while, but they still did nothing of it. At this point I had noted they were coming about 4 minutes apart, regularly and for a long period. But everybody still thought my body was preparing for labour still rather than actually in labour. At 11:30 I had a contraction and felt my waters gush, so had to hit the assistance button. After this I was placed on the monitor where my contractions became excruciating and I was past being able to bear it, so had to hit the call button again. Around this point my partner arrived, they had not yet said he could as I was not in establaished labour so he wasn't allowed in despite me expressing my severe discomfort. When my partner was there they also finally made the decision to check my cervix, finally realising how much pain I was in. Which is when they discovered I was 7cm dilated, so not only was I very much in established labour after only recently being offered just paracetamol. But I bad been on my own for the majority of the process despite explaining i was struggling and really needing my partner. And not offered appropriate pain relief. At this point we went to the birthing room, i had asked for an epidural but they explained it would likely be a little late to take effect. I was offered gas and air finally at this stage, which after not having adequate relief all day helped enough to get me through the rest of the labour. I could not fault either midwifes throughout the rest of the labour, they were lovely and supportive. But I feel like if I had been listened to initially things would be very different. If my partner had showed up when they had liked i very much believed I would have given birth alone too, my partner only showed up (without presmission) an hour and a half before our little boy came into the world. I'm feeling very let down during a pandemic, and was very understanding of the guidelines. But if they had just checked to see if things were progressing once, then they would have known i was in labour and in a lot of pain. But they didn't and I went through the most excruciating pain I will ever experience on my own.
