"My wife in labour"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a relative),

On Friday my wife gave birth to a little girl. That's the short way to put it.

On the Monday leading up my wife was asked to go into the hospital to be induced and she stayed over night. Through out the course of the Monday and Tuesday i was at home nervous and worried about everything that was happening at the hospital (this is our first child). My wife told me throughout the course of the day how nice all the nurses and midwifes were in the ward. So this eased my worries a bit

As nothing happened on the Tuesday she came home and I took her back in to try another method and then sent home the same day to relax. As nothing happened through the course of the day and night my wife was asked to come in on the Thursday and they broke her waters at 7.30am. I was sitting in the short stay car park thinking that they were just checking up and would just send her out. I got a call to say that her waters had broken and to come in. So i moved my car to the long term parking and went to the entrance of the hospital to meet a midwife who gave me a face mask and take me to the labour ward.

This is were I spent the rest of the day with my wife and saw first hand how amazing the nurses and midwifes were. They went above and beyond to make us comfy and make sure we were informed every step of the way. I know my wife would have been lost without them on the day and i cannot put into words how thankful we are for what they did for us.

My wife in the very early hours of the morning of Friday had to have a C Section to deliver the baby. We were incredibly worried but the doctors that came in to speak to us about the procedure explained everything and what would be happening.

Going into the Theatre Room I was amazed to how everything was. There were about 8 people in the room from doctors to technicians all doing separate jobs and knowing exactly where and when and what had to be done. All this on top of speaking with my wife and myself to keep our worries at bay. They were amazing.

I know this was a long story but I felt I had to get most of it in as it was very long week for myself and especially for my wife.

Again we can not thank all the nurses, midwifes and doctors enough for everything they did for us that week

Dear Oddbiscuit

congratulations on the birth of your baby girl and thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback.

Having a baby at anytime is an anxious time, but during the COVID period makes it more difficult as partners are not being able to stay due to our current antenatal and postnatal accommodation. I am pleased the staff supported your wife during this time and this helped to reduce your anxieties.

It is also reassuring you felt you were satisfied with the care your wife received, our aim is to provide person centred care which adheres to NHS Borders values.

I will ensure all the midwifery and medical staff are informed of your lovely feedback and I hope you and your wife can enjoy your time as a new family.

Kind Regards

Kirsteen Guthrie
