"Hospice kit facilitated family reunion in pandemic"

About: St Lukes Hospice

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

My Grandmother had cancer and was in her final stages. We really wanted her son from Switzerland to come and spend some precious times with her before she slipped away peacefully.

He was not keen in coming due to Covid-19 but once we said that the Consultant from St Luke's Hospice had given us a kit he was somewhat confident in coming and he made use of this kit when he visited. This kit included personal protective equipment (aprons, gloves, face masks), hand sanitiser, mouth sponges and information for carers.  His response, "An effective and beneficial goody bag".

To be honest, I think it is one of the best kits I have ever come across in terms of protection. It had everything to keep him safe from all of us. The kit was somewhat generous such as it had a big bottle of hand sanitiser. I think this kit really needs to be promoted not just to hospices but other sectors.

Thank you for giving us this kit, it really helped us as a family.

We are very happy that our carer covid kit enabled such an important family reunion to happen safely. Facilitating contact between terminally ill patients and their loved ones in these difficult times is a key role for the hospice.

Thank you for allowing us to share your feedback on Care Opinion to raise awareness of the benefit of these kits. It is great to hear that you feel they should be promoted. We are actively pursuing several avenues to learn from this experience and extend the roll out of these “carer kits” to more families irrespective of diagnosis.
