"Admitted via emergency helicopter, severe lower stomach pain."

About: Campbeltown Hospital / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Urology (Ward 11c) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Xrays and Scans

(as the patient),

I live in Kintyre, a 4. 5 trip on a bus to QEH I was suffering severe stomach pain and was transferred from my local hospital to QEH by helicopter. Having had scans and xrays done, it was thought I had a 6mm kidney stone. I was given morphine via mouth for pain. I was told if I didn't pass the stone I might have to have an op on the Monday - I was admitted early hours wed morning.

On sat morning a doctor came round, never seen them before, asked if I was in any pain. By then I was being given codeine and paracetamol for pain. I wasn't in any pain and was told I would discharged that morning. Not having been rescanned to check if stone was still there, I hadn't felt any discomfort passing urine, I found this odd. It was the doctors attitude after this. I asked how I was getting home,  they told me "same way you came', I informed them it was by helicopter. They said "do you think we provide a private plane for you?" I said there is a bus but it takes hours to get home. They said that was fine I can get the bus. Their whole attitude, lack of concern shocked me. A nurse had to show me where bus stop was and I had to sit in the cold in bus station for two hours waiting for my bus.

Hello Amylee,

I am sorry to read of your recent admission to hospital. It must have been a worrying time for you and I hope you are feeling better now.

I am especially sorry to read of your experience. All patients should be treated with dignity and respect. Please accept my sincere apologies that this wasn't the case for you.

Thank you for taking the time to share this post with us. I will share it with my colleagues at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Best wishes,

Rachel

Update posted by Amylee (the patient)

Dear Rachel, thankyou getting back in touch. I also want to say that since coming home, I've been in a lot of pain, lower stomach. I haven't eaten anything since Saturday morning as I feel sick all the time. I also haven't slept as I'm in too much discomfort. I will not be going to A&E again as I believe its not worth it, I don't know even know if I have still have the stone inside me! I've had enough of hospital's. I had an aortic aneurism two years ago which was magnificently successfully operated on. All staff have encountered have been marvellous, but that one doctor's attitude has made myself and family very angry.

Hello Amylee,

I'm sorry to hear that you are still feeling unwell and that you're unable to eat or sleep. I would really encourage you to contact your GP if you feel this way, it's important that you get seen to if you're not well.

I'm really sorry again about the experience you had. It's not the way we expect our patients to be treated. My colleagues at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital would really welcome the opportunity to look into the matter further, so we can ensure it doesn't happen again. Could you please email me with your date of birth and CHI number (if you have it to hand), so we can investigate?

Best wishes,

Rachel
