"Dermatology bloods appointment during Covid-19"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Dermatology (Skin Conditions)

(as the patient),

I attended an appointment to have bloods taken today at the dermatology clinic. They were aware I am shielding (as immunosuppressed) and this was noted several times throughout the call. It was stated I would be guided into a "hub" for my bloods, again, specifically for patients who are shielding. I was to wait in the car until called in, which I did do.

However, I was surprised to see the nurse was not wearing a mask or gloves when they came out to take in another patient who was waiting outside the entrance.

The patient left, also not wearing a face mask.

The nurse then came out, and called me in. I went inside to see a receptionist wearing a face mask, however the nurse who took my bloods had no mask, gloves, or apron. I didn't see the nurse wash, but assumed they surely must have.

I should have said something at the time, but felt when I returned to the car I'll just sanitise my arm/hand that the nurse touched.

And with further thought I decided to write to clarify what the procedures are regarding protocol during covid-19 pandemic.

I've been shielding for nearly two months, so it was surprising to see the hygiene/safety slip in Burnside House during a pandemic - I’m immunocompromised and feel this was not acceptable.

I hope future patients are treated with more caution and thought.

HI

I’m so sorry to hear that your experience at Burnside house was not as expected. This is especially pertinent at the present time when extra vigilance regarding cross infection is of the upmost importance within and without NHS facilities. I have discussed this concern with the Senior Charge Nurse responsible for Burnside house and she has discussed this incident with all her staff and can provide assurance that the importance of wearing a mask, gloves and apron when interacting with all patients who are shielding has been reinforced. This is the normal process that should be followed for such patients during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Again I apologies that your experience was not as you would have expected or to a satisfactory standard. I hope to are keeping well and are safe and that your time of shielding is for not much longer.

If you would like to discuss this further, if you provide a contact number to me by email I will be happy to give you a call: eleanor.binniemcleod@nhs.net.

Kind Regards

Eleanor Binnie-McLeod (Nurse Manager)
