"Unprofessional practice"

About: Dartmouth Medical Centre

My partner initially came to the GP for discomfort in the ear, and he was told it was nothing. He then booked another appointment, and was given amoxicillin, when he tried taking the dose, he suffered from gastric reflux, and he has been on PPIs before as reflux is a recurrent problem. The side effects got so bad that he stopped taking the doses and went back to the GP to ask for either a medication to protect his stomach lining whilst taking the antibiotic or to change antibiotic all together. His GP then said, "keep taking it and if it doesnt go then come back again" - seeing as his infection has been worsening over the week, and hes already been in twice in one week, it allowed for my time to go past while not receiving treatment. When he further said he had lost confidence and did not want to continue he was ignored and sent away.

Upon following this up, and stating a formal complaint would be made if the patient continued to feel ignored, they did change it. The fact it was changed only when the proposal of a complaint was made, and not for the patients best interest is questionable in itself. A patient is meant to be involved in the decision making process and this was never done.

As someone who works in the healthcare profession, patient centred care is of upmost importance, and today i feel there was a lack of consideration for the patient. The staff i spoke to were unhelpful, and the attitude was shocking for a healthcare setting. I am deeply saddened by this standard, as my partner has come away with a host of new symptoms and side effects, and generally feels a lot worse than before the treatment. Furthermore the conduct has caused a loss in confidence in the GP practice.

As an additional point the receptionist was the only person who aided the situation.
