"overall I have found the service very good"

About: Adult community services / Nutrition and dietetics

(as the patient),

Once a year I have an appointment with a dietician and I order my products through the hospital. Overall I have found the service very good. Recently my points have changed so I can’t get biscuits or sweets any more but I still get bread and mixes for pastry.

I have been on a gluten free diet for 5 or 6 years. For the first few years I had appointments annually but then I missed a couple of years. When I rang up to order my products I was told I needed to have an appointment to be able to order. I never received any reminder about these appointments. As they are only annually it is easy to forget to ring and book. If I could receive an automated reminder tell me to book in, this would be really useful.

Finally, my wife is housebound and I think it would be a good idea if housebound patients could have regular phone calls from the doctor (maybe once every 3-4 months) just to check they are getting the right products for them.

As part of my role, I support clinical services who undertake patient and public involvement on behalf of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust which helps us to develop or redesign our services with patients in mind, from the valuable feedback we are given.

Dear Energy478,

Thank you for your posting on the Patient Opinion web site. We always appreciate patient feedback and to know that overall your experience has been very good. Your posting was sent to the department of Nutrition & Dietetics who took over the management of the GP budget for Gluten free foods in September 2010. The GPs wanted patients to be followed up annually in order to receive products. If the annual appointment is not attended the patient is discharged from the service.

If the patient requires further support the Dietitian can be contacted via the GP or if the patient rings for more products then these will not be routinely prescribed until the patient has seen the Dietitian to discuss their diet.

The GPs have a limited budget and it was decided that core items such as bread, flour etc would be prescribed to give the same access to the budget for all patients.

The patient can request appointments with the Dietitian through their GP, so when patients require information it can be tailored to their needs.

The Nutrition & Dietetic service also provide an annual open day to look at products available over the counter in supermarkets as well as those prescribed and this year we are at the Carlton Park Hotel on 1st November 3pm to 7pm so please come and join us.

With best wishes,

Grace
