"One of the lucky ones"

About: Borders General Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (Ward 9)

(as a staff member),

I was admitted to ward 9 for a mastectomy last Tuesday and so grateful I was able to get this done as the ‘window’ for such operations is unpredictable.

The staff were absolutely lovely, friendly, helpful, supportive, understanding and professional at all times. The ward staff, anaesthetists, surgeon, Breast Care Nurse June, theatre staff, porter, domestics, physiotherapists and anyone else who was involved in my care a big thank you to you all.

I am one of the lucky ones, because working at BGH I knew a lot of them so I saw familiar faces all the time and felt like I had visitors. However, those  patients who didn’t have visitors, the staff kept their spirits up with their care and attention to each individual leaving no one out. Even though the ward was so busy there was always someone there to help or check if you needed anything. It was also good to see how the staff all supported each other in taking over tasks to cover for breaks.

Due to the COVID-19 a lot of  the staff on the ward when I was in were from different areas within NHS Borders but just took to the challenges that they all face.

I got home Thursday and I am so proud to work for NHS Borders with fantastic colleagues. Everyone is doing such a good job in whatever role they are playing, please stay safe because we still need you all after this is all over and we come out even stronger.

Thank you for your very kind comments. I'm glad that everything went well with your surgery and stay in the ward, and will pass on your feedback to the team.
