"Care of my Mother in Kingfisher ward"

About: Derriford Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Mount Gould Hospital

(as a relative),

Awful environment to see my Mum in. 4 bed ward with 5 beds in. No option for her to have privacy. The food she was served was disgusting,. Staff who treated my mum.. Some good some really bad, especially at night.

Mum did not feel safe. Never saw 1 nurse/physio/Dr/Healthcare Assistant wash their hands/use sanitiser! We only saw staff in charge once in 2 weeks, putting up signs ref Covid 19. I decided to get my Mum out of that environment and care for her myself by taking 6 weeks unpaid leave from work.

OT who brought my Mum home was patient but seemed under pressure and on a strict timescale. Glad I opted to care for my Mum myself as the care received was extremely poor.

Dear R King

I am sorry to hear about the ward difficulties experienced by your mother. Unfortunately, Kingfisher ward does not come within the remit of Derriford Hospital, so if your concerns relate solely to that ward, you will need to share your concerns directly with them. Livewell South West manage this area, and can be contacted by email at customerservicespch@nhs.net

If you have any concerns relating to your mother's care here at Derriford Hospital, please get in touch with us so we can investigate this for you.

Should you wish us to investigate your concerns in more detail, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01752 439884. Alternatively, please email the team at: plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net
Kind regards

Alison Stanton

We are sorry to hear of you mothers experience on our ward.

We have been supporting the wider healthcare system in Plymouth and surrounding areas during the winter period and the Covid 19 epidemic by providing 'surge beds' in our in-patient wards at the LCC. These are additional beds that we provide to give more capacity to the acute hospitals, such as Derriford, by ensuring those who need an acute hospital bed to get one.

We do understand that it can feel a little crowded in the bays with 5 beds and all patients admitted into our surge beds are routinely given a leaflet to explain the reasons for the additional bed and are supported to use our gym area, dayroom area and quiet areas as part of their rehabilitation to have a bit more space. We apologise if you did not receive one.

Our staff have been following national guidance around infection control and COVID 19 and we have implemented guidance on a daily basis as it has been updated. All our staff attend mandatory infection control training and hand washing is an absolute priority.
