"My recovery journey from alcohol dependency."

About: Change Grow Live Cambridgeshire / Huntingdon

(as a service user),

A few years ago I realised I needed professional  support as drinking was taking over my life in many ways, affecting my mental health, employment, relationships, my finances, I was putting myself in danger and my life was becoming destructive.

Through the doctors I was refereed  to CGL Huntingdon Cambridgeshire of which was then known as Inclusion. After being assessed I was allocated a keyworker  and was  fully supported 1:1 and in Groups to help reduce my alcohol use, in time I decided I wanted abstinence from alcohol.

I was full supported with this safely, I managed to achieve this without detox as I wasn't highly physically dependent. With great support I was able to stop drinking and I continued getting fantastic support. On and off I experienced  many lapses and returned to drinking for short periods of time.

Again fully supported by CGL.  Groups are fantastic as are staff.

I managed a good time of sobriety last year and was really pleased to become a peer mentor.

However due to personal issues I relapsed I was a mess! Life was unmanageable and I became physically dependent on alcohol. I had amazing support from all at CGL I was able to go back into treatment ,  I had a incident which involved police, CGL worked with me to help me feel safe and I received care and dignity through out.

I am home from detox and rehab I went on January this year I was helped  to get a placement  and prepared with pre rehab

And detox groups visit and much more. I spent 8 weeks in a residential centre. I am thankful for CGL for every aspect of my journey  I continue to receive after Care support . My life is Becoming manageable and I can smile again and I have health and a future.

What a story and I can sense there is much more to it too. I am so pleased you are doing O at the moment after such a terrible up and down period. Detox and Rehab is such a commitment and no-one should underestimate how hard it so a huge well done for coming through it. I often think about how people like you can help others. You have so much to give in experience and knowledge and if you feel you would like to do this at some stag then please talk to us. Congratulations and of course keep going!!
