"Diabetes clinic outpatient appointment"

About: Derriford Hospital / Diabetic medicine

(as the patient),

I attended an outpatient clinic appointment for insulin pump therapy patients, I expected it to have a focus on pump therapy and its consequences, such as discussions of blood glucose levels, hypos, hypers, HbA1c blood test result etc, but most of appointment was very vague and non-specific, no recommendations were made for any changes in pump treatment or monitoring, as such I felt it was a waste of their time and mine.

I felt that the whole appointment was formula based as a box ticking exercise with little to no interest in my individual situation, my concerns or preferences. The appointment ended somewhat abruptly when I refused to discuss taking medications that had no influence on my blood glucose levels and the same ones I had previously refused to take.

I left very unhappy and upset for the second time by a consultant clinic appointment, leaving in tears from my appointment where I felt I was being harassed and bullied with no consideration or respect was given to my choice of treatment, my opinion or my clinical decisions. Overall I felt that the consultant was being driven by a box ticking process with no concern for the individual, patient rights or the consent.

At the appointment there were 3 staff members in the appointment room with me, but no-one had asked if I was ok with this. Including one doctor that was just apparently observing, it made me feel very uncomfortable, especially when they smirked at me as I was disagreeing with the consultant.

It's a shame as it could be a really good clinic and much more accessible than most others in the south west, but sadly too many assumptions are made about patients and no respect is given to type 1 patients who ironically deliver their own care 100% of the time, it's so important for a consultant to work with a patient not to attempt to dictate treatment to them- this ruins lives. I really hope some productive changes can be made.

Peter Kelly, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, responded to say:

I was really disappointed to read the comments but appreciate the honesty.

I can’t comment on the specifics of the clinic appointment as I do not know the patient details. But I would say that I am sorry that the service and support received made them feel so upset. I will feedback to the consultants the comments and we will use them to shape our pump service in the future.

Kind regards

Pete
