"Miscarriage Support"

In early March, 9 weeks into my first pregnancy, I began to bleed profusely at home. Because of how unwell I felt and the amount of blood I had lost, I was taken to A&E. 

Even though everything was very busy due to the pandemic, I was seen to quickly and given medication to help with the painful cramps I was feeling. Dr. Mike (?) in particular was immensely helpful. His manner was superb. He was comforting and professional, and did all he could to listen and help. When I said that I struggled having a cannula in, he amended his technique to make it better, which made a huge difference for me in the days to come. He kept me chatting through the pain and worry, providing relief where he could. I can't express my thanks to him enough. He was simply excellent. 

After it was confirmed by the EPAS that I had a miscarriage and required additional assistance, I met with Dr. Nicky from Ward 49. She immediately projected an air of kindness and confidence, leaving me assured that I would be in good hands. She offered empathy and explained what was happening, but also demonstrated that she would be able to take care of me at this point. While I was very nervous for my first surgery, I was assured by her presence and leadership. 

Three nurses from Ward 49 looked after me before surgery, including Lisa with the curly hair and a lovely blonde woman with a caring manner who helped me into my compression socks. (I'm sorry for not remembering the names better.) They helped carry me and my partner through the uncertain time, offering sympathy and information, and helped us make it through the very difficult first hours after learning about the miscarriage. They gave us space to call our families and were great about supplying needed information and support. 

Sharon and two other nurses wheeled me through for surgery. Sharon in particular sat with me when she could and offered comfort and support to ease my grief and anxiety. I was alone and scared, and she did her best to assure me and support me. When I needed the bathroom or had questions, she was there. Just her presence made a big difference. 

I was nervous for my first time in anaesthesia, and all the anaesthesiologists were great. In particular, Ian prepared me for the surgery. He could see how scared I was, and really comforted me before I went in. As such, my last moments of awareness were of care, not fright. This was hugely appreciated. 

Afterwards, a Spanish nurse (Marie? Again, sorry for not remembering better!) helped wake me up. She was supportive and caring, and helped me transition back in a gentle and calming manner. 

Overnight, I was looked after by nurse Anne in Ward 49. It was lonely and overwhelming, and she did all she could to care for me and provide emotional support and reassurance. 

The next morning, a group of doctors and nurses came in to check on me and ask if I had any questions. I found this to be a little overwhelming, and Dr. Enje noticed my discomfort. She came back by herself to check in again. This was so appreciated, as was her kind, empathetic, and confident responses to my questions and worries. 

Nurse Corrine looked after me during the day. Even though she was busy, she was attentive and provided me with my needed medication, as well as comfort and support. 

The two days of my miscarriage and subsequent surgery were some of the hardest, saddest, and most painful of my life, but the medical team at the Queen Elizabeth did all they could to care for, support, and heal me. They were competent professionals, but even beyond that, they were caring and empathetic individuals. I will always be grateful to them for those small acts of kindness that helped me make it through. 

Please, if possible, could you pass on my thanks to Dr. Mike, the surgery team, and all those in Ward 49? I will remember them and appreciate them always.
