"Discharge risk assessment/remote support."

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Care of the Elderly (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

An elderly family member  is receiving excellent care in Ward 9 at Wishaw University Hospital following transfer after neurosurgery at QEUH. However support with her discharge and after care support is proving problematic.

Her household now also includes a younger family member who is being shielded.  We asked for our older person to be tested for Covid-19 prior to discharge but was told this wouldn't being offered.

Post-discharge, we want to provide care ourselves to minimise the risk of infection coming into the household but have been told that remote support with any care issues is not possible. Although our older person has been declared medically fit, her most recent cognitive assessment shows significant impairment (Addenbrooke's Assessment Score indicates a drop from 61 to 49), and she is agitated and distressed at night.

We feel let down that we can't be offered support. We feel anxious about her remaining in hospital , very concerned about the risk of cross-infection and apprehensive about caring for her without remote support. We feel this is a matter of urgency and this is increasing our anxiety.

Dear Distressed carer

Thank you so much for your feedback. I am delighted that the care within ward 9 has been excellent and I will ensure this is feedback to the ward 9 team.

I am sorry that you feel let down in relation to the discharge support. If you could call me on 07805824434 I can discuss your concerns further with you and try and resolve some of these issues.

Kind Regards

Anne Leitch
