"Unnecessary hospital stay"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital / Accident and emergency Pinderfields General Hospital / Neurology

(as the patient),

In March I was sent to A&E by GP after repeat blood test came back showing CK levels had spiked to an astronomical level. Normal level is around 200. Few weeks ago they showed at 700+ so the repeat was done and this showed CK at over 22,400.

I attended A&E on the Thursday and after bloods and assessment the doctor advised I was being admitted me for further investigation. I was taken to AAU and spent the night on a trolley not a proper room or bed. I stayed all Friday in the trolley room.

Friday night I was moved to a room but was only there 40 minutes as I was woken to advise I was being moved to neuro/stroke ward. Saturday morning a doctor came and assessed me and advised they wanted fluids and daily blood test to monitor CK levels. They also wanted MRI of head and full spine and EMG test. MRI was done Sunday tea time.

I was told Monday CK was coming down to normal and that EMG test could not be done for 2 weeks. I was told neurologist would also be done as out patient. I was told though that I would have visit from physio and occupational therapy on Tuesday.

Tuesday came and went with no visit. On Wednesday I was told that I was being discharged as CK levels now normal and other tests would be done as out patient. There was no clear mention of cause and possible diagnosis. Nor was I to be seen by physio or occupational therapy as I was seen to be mobile and independent.

I queried the CK levels when going back home and doing normal routine as before. I quizzed why CK level blood test was not done while undertaking controlled physical exercise as I was bed bound the entire 6 days. All this was dismissed as "athletes" do see slight raise in CK levels. I was not given any opportunity to discuss things with my doctor regarding possible diagnosis and cause, any advise regarding work and home life or potential treatments, they simply left. Their notes were as the nurses put it "extremely vague".

They chased regarding physio and found I was put forward but my doctor denied this opportunity. I was ushered to patient lounge where I spent 2 hours and 35 minutes in pain and uncomfortable awaiting discharge as nurses could not locate nor speak to my doctor on all of the above. In the end I have spent 6 days in hospital, 5 on the neuro/stroke ward with only bloods taken and MRI scan. I was not consulted regarding tests, treatment or advise on returning to daily grind. My doctor did examine by doing push/pull and grip test, albeit rushed. They did not test myself or have me tested by physio my ability to get up from chair or bed, walking or handling. I was informed by nurses my doctor knew neurologist would be done as out patient and did not come to me or pass on this information. I spent the 5 days on the neuro stroke ward completely in the dark. The nurses also knew as much as me.

I am absolutely disgusted that this doctor kept me in on that ward knowing full well neurologists did not visit as it is not a neurology ward. I am disgusted that their actions took up a bed on the neuro stroke ward knowing tests would be carried out as an out patient, taking up resources that the NHS simply cannot afford to throw away. I'm disgusted that they did not communicate effectively, did not include me in discussions on tests and plan of action, did not give me time or chance to clearly and fully notify of all of my symptoms, rushing their initial assessment instead of being thorough, rushing my consultation on Wednesday and that not being clear or taking time to advise on possible cause or necessary treatment moving forward. I'm disgusted that this doctor pulled away my opportunity to be assessed by physio and occupational therapy.

The entire stay on the ward was not my call. 2 doctors before had decided that I should be admitted as things were not right and that they had not seen CK levels so high. Potentially yes to stay in initially to bring CK levels down but I was told I would stay in for testing and to stabilise the situation and hopefully get diagnosis and treatment. Once under the main doctor this was derailed.

I cannot fault the nurses and assistants on the AAU and neuro stroke wards. The work, hours and care they give is faultless. I am absolutely shocked and disgusted that my symptoms and astronomically high CK levels were ignored despite 2 doctors at Pinderfields and my own GP's being concerned. My discharge note says "minor spinal canal stenosis C3-C4, high CK and possible polymyositis".

polymyositis is serious and so if it is suspected why was I not told clearly. Why was nothing advised for things to do and be careful of if polymyositis is suspected. Why was nothing tried or prescribed to try to see if it would work in reducing symptoms while in controlled environment of the hospital?

Utterly ridiculous care from this doctor. Utterly ridiculous 6 days in hospital. Utterly ridiculous that nothing substantial was done as a result of this doctor.
