"Urgent referral not accepted for elderly relative"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a carer),

My mother who is in her 80's was sent round by her gp to get her right ear syringed as it was full to the gunnel with wax, The GP marked urgent on her referral, but nurses said you need an appointment, we don't do urgent referrals(? ? ? )

Went back to their reception to complain, receptionist called them but still no, was sent to our own practice reception who contacted doctor who said they had no say over treatment room, receptionist called again and still no, had to make appointment for today at 5pm, so my elderly mother who has underlying health concerns is being trailed back out tonight to hopefully get her ear syringed, with this virus doing the rounds, my mother is being forced to come out to totally unnecessary visit to health centre when this should have been dealt with yesterday when her doctor sent her around to treatment room with urgent referral, this is not good enough at all (including today I have put the necessary oil into my mothers ears for 12 days. could you look into this as her right ear being full of wax is affecting her balance etc.

Hello Bubba123,

I'm sorry to hear about the experience you and your mother have had recently. I understand it must be very frustrating for you both.

GP Practices are independent contractors, which means they have a slightly different process for dealing with complaints and feedback. However, I'd like help you to find out the best way to take this forward and hopefully get this sorted for your Mum.

With your Mum's consent, would you please email me with some more details, such as the name of the practice and where the referral was made to? You can reach me at: rachel.pyle@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Best Wishes,
Rachel
