My husband was admitted to Ealing Hospital in Nov 2020 with breathing difficulties. He was put on oxygen & sent home the following day (with and anti-biotics)
He was unable to breathe again the following night and I asked the ambulance if he could be taken to Hammersmith because he is a transplant patient. They rang Auchi but Hammersmith would not take him as they have no A&E, so he was taken to Ealing again & admitted to intensive care where fluid on the lungs and a heart attack were diagnosed.
After the 1st week, the family was called in and told he would not pull through. Then there was a change of consultant and he stabilised and went to the ward (cardiac) several days later. He was very confused mentally and started having hallucinations (auditory and visual). I later discovered he had been put on a beta-blocker while in intensive care - he is allergic to them - they cause him to have hallucinations.
He fell over in the toilet while hallucinating and hurt himself. He was then taken off the beta-blocker and the confusion got better! I called the psychiatric liaison team in but it took far longer than their 24 hour protocol because it was the weekend which was disappointing. He then caught flu (A+B) as he has no immune system & finally his blood sugar went low as he had stopped eating and it was then discovered he had sepsis. Not impressed, as I had to ask them to look at him as I was so worried! Overall an awful 9 weeks.
