"Unsure of the road ahead"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Surgery (Ward 5)

(as a volunteer/advocate),

Ward 6.

Nursing staff been very good. Nursing staff taken time to explain test results, cheery and responded to rep quests for help very quickly. Patient has now a sense of confidence that she will be dealt with quickly and efficiently and with manners and dignity. Nurses ‘trying to do about 10 things at one time’. Nurses always in good humour.

Doctors did not always explain why certain procedures were being carried out. Patient felt doctors very busy but did not explain procedures ahead very well. Nurses were able to explain in much clearer language. Lack of continuity of treatment by doctors has caused differing approaches to treatment. Patient loses trust in what doctors are saying.

Medication comes on time most of the time. Ward staff very busy. Buzzers answered quickly.

Family happy with care while in hospital, but waiting game is a hard one. Unsure of road ahead, doctors should have answers from all tests soon.

Dear UHH204,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our volunteer and recognising the industry and professionalism of the nursing staff who do work hard.

Communication is a very important aspect of healthcare and I know waiting to have investigations and tests to help with diagnosis can be an anxious time. Whilst it's disappointing to hear that you weren't always clear from your conversations with doctors, I'm glad the nursing staff were able to support you; this team approach to healthcare is essential so that people are informed and able to make decisions about their care and treatment.

I'll be sharing your feedback with all the staff groups on the ward for reflection, discussion and learning.

Please be sure to ask a member of the team if you are unsure of anything.

I wish you well with your ongoing treatment.

Kind regards

Rick
