I attended Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy for a routine colonoscopy and this was the 8th colonoscopy I have had. My initial one being in 1999. I found the most recent one a traumatic experience and completely the opposite of my previous procedures. The reason for this being I believe a number of factors . Previously it was a doctor who carried out the procedure. I am not adverse to other staff doing the procedure however I do not know if this had any influence in what followed. For example I was given insufficient sedation and pain relief that is I received 2mg of midozalam when I have normally received 5mg in the past therefore this had little or no impact on me. Secondly I was asked to change my position on numerous occasions such as lie on my tummy and change from side to side frequently which again never occurred before as I have always remained on my left hand side for the whole procedure. This made me increasingly anxious, uncomfortable and as
I was in so much pain it became unbearable. Furthermore there was a member of staff present who was learning how to carry out the procedure and I was being used for this .In addition there were 5 nurses and one student nurse in the room which felt overbearing. Eventually they aborted the procedure as I was in so much pain and I have to return for a scan of the right side. This experience has made me feel I can not endure another colonoscopy and I feel this could have future impact on my health and well being as due to other conditions I require 3 yearly follow ups.
On a more positive note I have to say most of the staff were friendly and attempted to comfort me. In conclusion it is not the most pleasant thing to go through taking into account the preparation etc...
