I received a stage 1 SNS under local anaesthetic at the New Victoria hospital for urinary retention. On the day I was told I would get a local and if I struggled I could get sedation, during the surgery I was crying and shouting out in pain and despite a few encouraging words I received no care or treatment to make this more bearable.
I was only able to get one probe implanted, instead of 2, as I found the pain too unbearable and wasn't offered sedation. This could impact the outcome of my treatment and would have been managed if I could have received the right treatment. The nurse also acted with very little compassion in regards to my pain and being upset with this.
Post operative I was in a lot of pain and was only given my regular painkillers which had no effect, and when asked about this I was told I was "over emotional" as I had been tearful prior due to previous poor experiences. I felt this was so rude and completely unacceptable to not treat the pain I was expressing, which I thought was something that was taught to nurses that pain is susceptible and different between people and to treat the pain as expressed by a patient not how they perceive it.
On discharge I was told I would be contacted every 2-3 days, and if I had any issues I had two points of contact to reach out to. This week I have experienced issues, but neither of the contacts given have been available. The contact numbers are useless and my emails have been unanswered despite being in pain and needing help. I have had to reach out to a doctor for help or advice on who else I can speak to.
Overall the whole experience has been traumatising, upsetting and not to the standard I would expect of the NHS. I am so disappointed overall and I am now dreading the 2nd stage and having to deal with the same staff, who I've had such a bad relationship with.
