"Ear deafness due to excessive wax"

About: St Richards Hospital / Out of hours service

(as a service user),

I was recently seen at out of hours as I had severe deafness and ear pain. I was instructed to continue olive oil drops as my ears had lots of wax, then to hold a hot shower hose to flush out wax also to buy a self ear syringe bulb. However this has caused me to get otitis externa also known as swimmer's ear.

I saw my own gp who just happens to be specialised in microsuction and ears, who said you should never put water in the ears as this can cause infection. Luckily I didn't do it to both ears only the one that is now infected. I feel that staff must be informed never to suggest putting water in the ears.

I was also seen by another staff member who was very good and helpful.

Hi Toby,

I'm sorry to hear this. Perhaps if you could email further details, including the date and time of your appointment, to complaints.ic24@nhs.net then we can identify the member of our team that you saw and we can provide some feedback.

I hope your ear is improving.

Best wishes,

Ricahrd
