"Hand fracture journey"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Fracture Clinic Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Hand Trauma service Woodend Hospital / Elective Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I attended the ED at ARI following a fall where I sustained a hand injury.  I was called through to the minor injuries unit and underwent a typical assessment of examination, x-ray and in my case an orthopaedic review as I had fractured my hand. I was treated very kindly by Ben the registrar who had to deal with a blubbering mess when I first arrived and Kieron made sure he did not cause any further distress or pain when performing my x-rays.  After an orthopaedic review it was decided to splint my hand and return the following week to the fracture clinic for a review.  Unfortunately I did not see the plaster techs and I was sent home in a splint that was not fit for purpose.  I should add that I am not pointing the blame at anyone about this as mistakes happen and it was fixed before any lasting damage occurred.

On my return to the fracture clinic I was then reviewed Anna the orthopaedic registrar who knew that surgical intervention was needed.  She then organised an admission to the orthopaedic unit at Woodend 2 days later for surgical fixation.  Meantime Allan the plaster tech worked his magic and put me in a more comfortable splint until my op.

I attended the DoSA initially as part of the hand trauma list and then ward 10 following my surgery.  I cannot fault this service.  All the staff were so friendly and very attentive.  They made sure I was kept informed throughout the whole process which makes you feel so at ease.  Ms Miller and her team performed my surgery and I couldn't have asked for a better surgeon.  Every thing was explained and executed with precision.

I met an Australian nurse in recovery who was recruited to NHSG, she had the morphine on hand, that's probably why I can't remember her name but she was a life saver with that syringe.  The anaesthetic team and recovery team I always think are forgotten about because your so sleepy in their company but they look after you so well when your at your most vulnerable.  Thank you all.

I have to say an extra thank you to SCN Caroline and her team who cared for me so well post op and even gave me the delight of a single room.  Quite honestly Lynsey was so lovely and attentive not just to me but all her patients.  She is an asset to any team.

Thank you all for your kindness and care.
