I have chronic IBD. My GP is helpful, but has limited knowledge of my condition. He referred me to Gastroenterology at NGH. My condition is now fairly stable and I see a specialist regularly instead of a doctor. The advantages of this to me are
- more regular appointments
- more relevant knowledge than GP
- access to advice by phone email if I have a flare up
Guessing that it is good for NHS too - frees up consultant and GP time
I think this is such a good model for chronic conditions that need to be managed. A friend has a similar model for asthma.
It has really made a difference to me that this service is available. It helps that the nurse I see is very competent and friendly. I really feel that expanding this kind of provision could be a big step forward for the NHS.
Thanks
