"Hospital food"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

Very angy over the food at hairmyres it leaves a lot to be desired! I've heard all the excuses and all the speeches, and all the information that you give about the food but it just doesn't ring true.

The bottom line... in my opinion the food is disgusting in the wards, and the canteen is grossly over-priced and no... it is not "in line with local prices". Nowhere would charge over £5 for a TINY bit of lasagna that has way too much salt and garlic in it.

While I was in all I did was get food brought to me from outside the hospital.

For crying out loud people! Food is a basic essential, I feel that this hospital provides overpriced slop.... listen to people, listen to the complaints, and sort it out!

Dear Annoyed and confused

We apologise that you felt that the Patient Catering service fell below the standards expected.

A new 2 week patient menu cycle was introduced Monday 24 February 2020 which includes greater variety of choices for patients to choose from. An additional hot lunch option to omelettes and baked potatoes is now on offer.

All our meals have been assessed by NHS Lanarkshire’s Chief Dietician to ensure they offer appropriate nutritional intake and balance and comply with national guidelines.

The patient menus have also been considered to ensure better colour co-ordination for presentation purposes.

Patient catering within the hospital is from approved suppliers. In line with Food In Hospitals (revised March 2016) and local hospital policy, menus must provide no more than 6g/day of salt.

In addition, we do not add seasoning at the preparation stage. Seasoning (salt and pepper) is provided for patients at Ward level to suit their own taste preferences.

We are sorry to hear our retail food offering was not to your expectations, we strive daily to provide a value for money offering to all our customers be it NHS staffing or patients visiting or staying in the hospital. All our meals are made with quality ingredients sourced from traceable and reputable suppliers and we are disappointed this did not live up to you expectations on you visit.

All our recipes are standardised and we follow them strictly to ensure continuity of our food offering, our lasagne is served with side salad, chips and garlic bread and we believe it to be value for money at £5.50, however we will continue to carry out visits to other establishments to review their pricing structures.

Best wishes

Lynne
