"Fantastic Staff and Care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

On 8th January 2020, I was preparing to head out to work when I lost my footing and tripped at the bottom of my stairs. What I had hoped was a bad sprain or some ligament damage, turned out to be a fractured ankle. A friend drove me to A&E at UHW where I was seen in the Minor Injuries unit. Fast forward a few hours, and I was admitted to Ward 15 following Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) surgery due to ankle displacement. The kindness, care and compassion afforded to me was top level (not that I had any doubt it would be). I myself am an NHS employee within the Workforce department and am therefore well aware of the challenges facing the NHS and those who work within it on a daily basis.

The staff on Ward 15 were amazing. No ask was to big, every ask was completed with a smile, the staff on a daily basis were a gold standard example of the kind, caring and compassionate people we have within our health service.

Being in hospital is never easy, but during my week long stay - the staff went above and beyond day after day to ensure the comfort of myself and the other patients on the ward.

During my time on the ward, I watched as the amazing staff dealt with many different challenges that came their way including helping a "difficult" patient whilst still maintaining their ever confident, polite and kind demeanour - showing respect even where none was due.

Our NHS nursing staff truly are the best of us, and I am so incredibly grateful for everything they did and continue to do for patients like myself - day in, day out.

Dear John13,

Many thanks for taking the time to post your experience while attending the ED with a fractured ankle.

The staff will be delighted to read your kind words and I will ensure that this is passed onto the staff within the ED.

I hope this finds you on the road to recovery.

Best wishes

Andy
