"Really need to look past cancer"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My husband was taken by ambulance into the accident and emergency with a temperature of 39. No fault with the receiving doctor, my husband has stage 4 prostrate cancer he had chest pains also, it was decided to keep him in.

On visiting next day he had been given a steroid which I had repeatedly asked not to be given the evening before, doctor came round during visiting... said they didn't know where to send him, urology or general medicine, I waited 30 minutes to find out... then started home (10mins away). Husband phoned, he was getting home.

Long story short it has turned out he has low-grade pneumonia red blood count is down and he thought he was dying on Saturday, due to the disregard of doctors and nurse my husband was sent home like this, because no one it seems knew what to do.

I knew it wasn’t cancer related, and the receiving doctor seemed to know this had to be investigated. Thankfully we have a wonderful gp who put my husband on antibiotics right away... maybe if it had been treated right away at the hospital? This is not the first time the RAH has fallen short for us, last year they failed to diagnose that my husband had septis - 3 times he was sent home. Really really need to see past cancer and look, and look again.

Hi Georgia

I'm so sorry that your husband has had such a poor experiences at the RAH, especially during such a difficult and worrying time in his life. I can only imagine how upsetting this most recent episode must have been for you both. Please be assured this is not the standard of care we strive for.

We would welcome the opportunity to discuss with you and if you feel this would be helpful please feel free to contact me my phone (0141 314 6891) or email (linda.russell2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk).

With all best wishes,

Linda
