As a healthy 25yo, it came as a massive shock that I had a large hole in the heart, which was far too large to be closed by inserting a device through catheter.
Though 6 months of consultations, appointments and various tests, it was confirmed open heart surgery was the only option. Every clinician I saw was consistent with this and provided straight forward information each time.
Ward 3 East, was great in managing the night before the surgery and keeping me up to date with changes and timings of the day. I wasn't anxious at the time, but I know this was shock or my way of coping. The nurses in their well-scripted information only ensured my nerves never rose.
Following the surgery, although vomiting and not completely conscious, I remember being spoken to by the ICU nurses (Lauren or Laura maybe and a nurse with all colours in her hair, made me smile) and them gently stroking my head gave me great comfort. I don't remember much else but that small thing motivated me to sit up and be patient with myself and letting the experience just pass.
Back on the ward 3 East, time did not pass quickly and I felt really unwell, my chest hurt and being asked how I was, made me roll my eyes and think what a stupid question. Despite this, the nurses were consistent and thoughtful. I, being 25 and healthy and here by chance, did not fit into the "patient role" very well, however it was respected and they were happy to let my visitors stay all day and chat and make me lots of tea. For this I truly thank you all.
