"Appointments are like gold dust"

About: City Health Care Partnership CIC / GPSI sexual health and women's service

(as a service user),

Had to wait 4 weeks for an appointment to have the coil fitted after my GP referred me due to them being short staffed. I’m 37, married with two children and felt that this was the wrong place for me. That aside, I received a phone call from the nurse after booking the appointment, to go through things with me. I said I was hoping for the copper coil as it has no hormones, and I have come off the pill for that reason - I don’t want unnecessary artificial hormones in my body because of my age and mental health. The nurse told me that the hormonal coils just send the hormone directly into your cervix, so they won’t affect anything else. Okay I thought, let’s give it a bash.

I still had to wait 30 minutes past my appointment time to get seen. The waiting room was full of young girls and it just didn’t seem right that we both go to the same place? That in itself made me feel very uncomfortable and I’m sure others will feel the same.

I was seen by the doctor who asked me some questions and prescribed Levosert - my periods are heavy and for that reason they wouldn’t recommend the copper coil which I already knew from the phone call with the nurse.

Everything was fine at first except spotting and cramping which I was told is normal. And then over the last two weeks my mental health has really suffered - I have felt incredibly low and generally emotional - to the point where I was desperate to have the coil removed as I know it was the cause. I have also had very tender breasts which was NOT something I was told about, and I believe goes to prove that the hormone is indeed affecting my entire body and not just isolated to my cervix.

I phoned City Health yesterday but the automated message says they are experiencing a high volume of calls and to hold the line. I phoned around the same time today (around 9:30am) and it said the exact same thing. I waited for about 5 minutes each time but it seemed pointless - I’m not even sure there is someone manning the phones.

I would never have had it fitted if I’d have been given the right information in the first place.
