"Wish I'd never been"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus

Got seen by the Lung Function dept in relation to my sleep apnea. I don't get on very well with the machine and often feel like it is suffocating me. Rather than offer me encouragement or help, they threaten to get my driving licence taken from me.

I would recommend that nobody engages with the sleep apnea people here, as once they have you on their system you are at risk at loosing your driving licence, a fact that they seem to want to tell me every time I go. So I'm not going any more. So I'll not be getting any help with my sleep apnea.

Nowhere else within the NHS have I experienced such a horrible team. Medicine should be about help and encouragement, not threats.

I’m sorry to hear of your experience. Please be assured that our priority is providing high quality diagnosis and treatment to every individual patient.

The law requires that the DVLA is informed by a patient if they have a clinical diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), and the DVLA may recommend patients stop driving until their symptoms are under control. Failure to disclose a diagnosis of OSA to the DVLA could result in a patient incurring a fine of up to £1000.

We understand the worry this can cause for patients who feel at risk of losing their driving licence, this is why since April 2019 all patients are informed of this fact in writing before their first sleep study. We will continue to keep patients informed of this legal responsibility, but we are very sorry for any misunderstanding that has occurred.

I would be happy to speak to you further about your experiences and any concerns you may have. I can be contacted on 0115 9691169 ext 56191.

Kind regards

Rachel Holt

Clinical Head of Respiratory and Sleep Services
