"Cleft diagnosis"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Surgical Paediatrics (Children's Surgery) Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatric surgery ( Wards 3A & 3B)

(as a parent/guardian),

After our baby being diagnosed at my 20 week scan with a cleft lip and possible palate, we were then told to go to Aberdeen to meet with a nurse. After doing so we only received one, maybe two phone calls. It then got to the day of our babies arrival and no one could get hold of a specialist nurse who was supposed to be around when he was born. I tried to call, the hospital was unaware of the specialists location. This was then very stressful as lead to an extra day in hospital until a practitioner could be sent up from Glasgow. Since our boy was born I have had no contact from the service in Aberdeen.

Once the nurse from Glasgow started seeing us and our baby the support was much better and more helpful.

Leading up to our little boys surgery date I again had no contact from my local services in Aberdeen, only the nurse from Glasgow. Once in Glasgow for our little boys 1st operation it came to our attention that the service in Aberdeenshire that we received was next to nothing compared to the service that other cleft patients that are covered by the Glasgow nurses have received.

I am disappointed that people going through the same situation and diagnosis are not receiving the same support.

Dear JSB1

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

I am really sorry to hear that you have not received consistency of communications and support whilst dealing with your new baby's diagnosis and subsequent surgery.

We would like to look at this in more detail with you and if you are happy to do so please contact my colleague pamela.mcgoldrick@ggc.scot.nhs.uk who can advise what additional information would help us to do this.

I hope your wee boy is doing well at this time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Jamie

Hello JSB1

Thank you for your feedback. I am really sorry to hear that you weren't as well supported as you should have been through your pregnancy and after your baby's birth.

The specialist nurse in Aberdeen works very closely with the Glasgow team and as Jamie has said above, if you would like to get in touch with the email address he has provided we will work together to see why we have fallen below the expected levels in this case and put plans in place to make sure this doesn't happen again.

If you would like to discuss anything with me in the meantime please drop me an email - carolinereid@nhs.net and we can have a chat. I hope you little boy is doing well.

Kind regards

Caroline
