"It took a whole day to discharge me"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Surgery (wards 19, 20, 24, 26 &29)

(as a service user),

I was admitted for an elective procedure in January.

As l hadn't recovered enough from my anaesthetic l stayed over..  as there were no beds available in the main hospital l spent the night in ward 32 in the maternity hospital.

My problems began the following day when the nursing staff tried to discharge me..it took a whole day to discharge me, it took hours for my medication to reach ward 32, l was eventually discharged at 17.30, l spent the day in bed as my surgery was on my foot and where possible for 6 weeks l have to keep this foot elevated..as most hospitals are desperately short of beds..this dreadful service from the pharmacy department just adding to the bed problem, the nursing staff spent the day apologising to me, as l was ready to leave the ward after breakfast..they were the wrong ones apologising, it wasn’t their fault l was kept in hospital an extra day..

This pharmacy needs sorting out.

Hello Mrs JM,

I'm sorry to hear about the delays with your discharge. I have shared your experience with Janice Watt, the Lead Pharmacist for Acute Services and she was able to look into what happened. Please see her response below:

"Firstly I am sorry that you experienced such a long delay to your discharge from the RAH. Without patient details it can sometimes be difficult to identify any specific prescriptions. However from what you have shared I asked the Pharmacy Team at the RAH to review and let me know their findings. I believe that your discharge prescription was written by your doctor, and screened and dispensed by the pharmacy team all of this took just over an hour. However as the maternity unit does not have a dedicated pharmacy porter, instead they have scheduled runs in the morning and late afternoon. We regret that the medicines remained in pharmacy uncollected until 5pm. We have since been in dialogue with wider hospital team and think about how best to manage patients boarded to the maternity hospital to prevent a similar situation occurring in the future."

Very best wishes,

Rachel
