"Surgical observation waiting area"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Surgical Observation Unit

(as a service user),

This waiting area is narrow and claustrophobic for service users.  It is a utility closed corridor for staff . This includes their changing room and toilet, their kitchen and private break time space. Service users can hear their conversations through the closed door . The corridor is narrow with chairs facing into each other on both sides . It is not possible for those with mobility aids to sit with their aid beside them and bags etc reduce the corridor with .It was so disheartening to see the white board note asking users to accept that they could sit up to 4 hrs or more in this space .

A very stressful  area to sit . Feels as if users are being held in an area never designed as a waiting area . A waiting area should be bright and airy with a water machine or sign to direct users to refreshments .

Dear Brora

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us following your recent experiences of the Surgical Observation Unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and I was sorry to hear how you found in the waiting area.

I have shared your feedback with the team at the Royal Infirmary for them to consider especially your comments about a water machine or directions to refreshments in the main mall,

Thank you again for sharing your feedback with us.

With best wishes

Jeannette

Dear Brora,

I have heard back from the management team of this clinical area and they too would like to apologise for your experiences and they recognise that the waiting area isn’t ideal. They were keen to share with me that this clinical area is one of the areas being looked at as part of the hospital's Front Door Redesign work that is taking place at the moment which hopefully will make it better for patients and families in the near future.

With best wishes

Jeannette
