"Eye Clinic - Glaucoma"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as a relative),

My dad has been attended the Eye clinic for glaucoma for as long as l can remember. Prescribed eye drops & always put them in. In April 2019 he saw a new consultant. Usual tests carried out & my dad goes back into see the consultant.

Consultant tells my dad that his pressure in his eyes is way too high! One eye the pressure is way too high & nothing can be done to save the sight. He has no vision in that eye! The other eye needs a cataract operation on it to try & save what sight he has left! Or he will be blind within a few years!

Prescribed two sets of eye drops & back to see consultant in a month! Put on waiting list for cataract operation! Would do this operation first & then possible glaucoma operation. Depending on how his eye is. Nothing can be done for the other eye.

My poor dad was devastated. As he had been attending every appointment & was never told anything about operations or his pressure was too high. He mentioned he felt his sight had changed & was told that is what happens with glaucoma. He believed his consultant. He underwent a cataract operation in May 2019. He saw consultant in June 2019 & was told not the improvement he would have liked.

Looking at a glaucoma operation or laser. Back in 2 to 3 months. He is still waiting for an appointment! Phoned several times & spoken with consultants secretary. Only to be told clinics are very busy & he is on the list for the next available appointment. As well as any cancellations!

More damage is being done to my dad’s sight! He should have been seen by now & decision made on what happens next for him! He was seen in June & it is now January! So much for 2 to 3 months!

Dear Kazza26

Thank you for your feedback.

I am very sorry to read about your Dad’s experience. I know that this must be a worrying and anxious time for your Dad and the family.

I would like to look into this further for you and be able to provide your Dad with some answers to the issues that you have raised here. With your father’s permission, I would be grateful if you could provide me with your dad’s details so that we can look into this further. Can you please contact me at Nicole.McInally@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Thank you

Nicole
