"A let down"

About: Stowhealth

This is a review for a visit, but I didnt get as far as seeing someone, because of the appointment booking system. I've never understood how it works and why you have to explain to someone over the phone why you needed to be seen - I fell off my bike in November 2018, had to wait a couple of hours, in a lot of pain and with a knee swelling up by the minute until someone finally called and deemed me a case to be seen by a doctor. But I digress. This review is for the telephone conversation I had with a GP from this practice on Monday, 6th of January. I had booked a telephone appointment online, for 10 am, for which I blocked my diary at work, to be ready and available. The doctor called two hours earlier, when I wasn't expecting her to and wasn't available; her voicemail message said to get back to the surgery IF I still needed the appointment! Which I did, at 10 o'clock, otherwise what's the point of even booking an appointment?! She called back, asking the dreaded question - why do you need to see a doctor? So I tried to explain I was looking to book the 'over 40' wellness check, which you get invited for when you turn 40. I told her I had concerns about my weight, which has piled up recently, that I wanted to talk about my mental and physical health. I have been postponing making an appointment to see someone about my mental health for many months, because I just bottle it up and cannot talk to people about it, it makes me feel like a failure as a mother and partner, makes it hard for me at work because I am not going anything about it, and at work. I didnt want to say that to a faceless stranger over the phone. I would find it difficult enough to open up to a stranger in person! Whoever reads this will most likely dismiss everything and say that they need to know what I need to see a doctor about, so they can book me with the right person. Fair enough, but they are all GPs! Any one would do, any one could make a referral after an initial consultation! I was offered an appointment on that day, when I could not attend! There was no option to book an appointment in the future! My old GP practice were brilliant, you could walk in between 8 and 10 am, you got given a number and you waited to see a GP for a 10 minute consultation. You could also call and book an appointment for a date and time you knew you were free. It will take a lot from me to call Stowhealth back, I will just have to struggle on my own and hope for the best.

I am sorry you are not happy with our telephone appointment system. The practice takes patient confidentiality very seriously and because of the issues you have listed, could you please contact the Complaints Manager at the surgery so that this can be discussed with you further and hopefully resolved. Stowhealth would like to emphasise our desire to continue to provide you with the best possible care.
