"Requires Extensive Improvement"

About: St Helens Care Home

The CQC should really be looking at this care home. Although some of the staff were friendly and caring, there are some serious health and safety and safeguarding issues that require urgent attention. Myself and my husband visited father and we had not been there before. We rang the doorbell and were given immediate entry to the centre, not asked for ID or to sign in. The centre was considerably scruffy (agreed by one of the workers), had a terrible smell and totally depressing. One of the residents was in the toilet with no one attending and the door open for all to see! It was lunchtime and the food was being served - really, congealed beans and toast, stone cold. My father had a fall and a crash mat had not been placed next to his bed which due to the nature of behaviour was essential. We were told they had low profile beds so a crash mat was not necessary, if so why did he suffer injuries. His mattress was considerably soiled and we were told this was because they were short staffed. Residents with different levels of dementia were all present on the same floor with open access which was extremely intimidating. Overall, on leaving we were astonished that places like this exist. This is a shocking place with urgent action required asap.
