"Non Hodgkin lymphoma"

About: Churchill Hospital / Clinical haematology Churchill Hospital / Radiotherapy John Radcliffe Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as the patient),

I thought I had tonsillitis was quite a shock to be told I had lymphoma however from the first diagnosis the Macmillan nurses gave me support that I needed, just to know there was somebody at the end of the phone for me to speak to, if needed.

Initially I was under ENT at JR hospital however after having 2 biopsies I never received the last biopsies results, so a couple of months later I went back to GP who requested an appointment at Churchill ENT where I had my tonsils out and the lymphoma was found within a month of attending the Churchill I had been diagnosed and receiving my first chemo session

Yesterday I received the great news that the cancer had gone, I understand I will be monitored for another 2 years and still have the Macmillan nurses available if I have anymore questions.

Dear Stansmum,

Thank you very much for sharing your story about our service and it is so good to hear that your treatment has been successful. I am pleased to hear that our specialist nurses provided such valuable support and I will share your feedback with them. Sometimes our staff don't get to hear how much their work is valued, so sharing your story in this way is a reminder for them of the great service they provide. Thank you for taking the time.

I am sorry to hear that you experienced a delay in your diagnosis. Sadly, this is a common experience for people who have lymphoma, not just in Oxford but across the UK. We are working to identify how we can improve the processes that lead up to a diagnosis, to ensure that people are seen by an expert and start treatment as soon as possible. This is also an area that we hope to do more research on, working in partnership with colleagues in general practice.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions or if you would like to share more about your experience at the Churchill. In the meantime, best wishes for a happy and healthy 2020.

Kind regards,

Catriona
