My daughter who has ASD, Anxiety, mental health issues was 8 yrs old at the time, she had taken an overdose of children's paracetamol. To help her feel better! Free her from anxiety symptoms.
She was admitted into hospital to a child's ward, treated for the overdose which caused her to be unwell, vomiting profusely.. Seems she was given the wrong dose, adult instead of child. But this was acknowledged and I was informed about it.
The episode which made me feel very angry and upset was an actual paediatric consultant questioning "when she was diagnosed" with Autism... And that she "didn't look like" she had it! This lack of knowledge, or even ignorance and presumption that children on the spectrum have a look about them was astonishing... The reason we were there was due to her mental health, this was never discussed with my daughter, not even a conversation, from that day it has and still is a constant battle for support, understanding and acknowledgement from all professionals involved. Camhs, GP, school, paediatrics.
"A constant battle for support"
