"Stillbirth at Newham Maternity"

About: Newham General Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I went for my normal midwife app in barking and was told they couldn’t find a heartbeat and would have to go to Newham triage department for a scan on the Wednesday. Upon arrival I was seen straight away however when waiting for the heartbeat to be checked a senior midwife said to her colleague “im just going to eat now”. First thing I thought was how rude I’m lying here and my baby has no heartbeat. Waited 5 hours for a doctor to come give me a tablet to go home and come back Friday morning at 8.

Friday morning arrived on the labour ward at 8.30 and was greeted by a lovely midwife well spoken. She put us into a room however not her fault but we was in that room for 5 hours apparently waiting for a room to be free. Was told at 2 room was free and would be getting cleaned. Finally got to a clinical room around 3ish and had a pill inserted at 4. Midwife I had then was ok but there was no reassurance no conversation.

My next midwife was going to be the midwife that was going to help me deliver my stillborn baby boy and I can’t express how angry I am writing this next part. Absolutely useless pointless her even being there. She couldn’t even put the line in my hand she tried to do it in my left hand and bloody hurt me in the process, she was that useless another midwife had to come and do that. I was in so much pain I couldn’t bear it she had no words, complete silence from her. My partner and mum helped me through each contraction and help me deliver my baby boy while she just stood there. Again no words this was an absolute joke. I knew my baby wasn’t going to be with me when he was born but to have a midwife who didn’t seem to care or show any compassion for her job - I don't think you should be in this profession.

The care from the night staff here was another absolute joke if you don’t like your job then I don't think you should be a midwife. I have never felt so let down and disgusted with the care I received because of a few midwives. There was this one midwife who came into see me and say sorry for your loss I wish I got her name.

The doctors I saw were fantastic I couldn’t fault them. Reassured me on what was going to happen during and after. Again I wish I got there names. I would like to say a huge thank you to the last doctor I saw who was an amazing doctor and made me feel just that bit better considering my story.
