(as a relative),

To whom it may concern -

Firstly I must apologise for the delay in writing this but “Better Late than Never”.

My husband died in July 2019.

I write to convey my own and my family’s appreciation of the services he received from NHS Fife locally at Dalgety Bay Health Centre and at both Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline and Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy during many years of attending various departments - Haematology, Chemotherapy Day Ward, Urology, Dermatology, Plastic Surgery and Cardiology along with Radiologists, Radiographers, etc. at X-ray departments.

Unfortunately I cannot recall the names of many of the people who attended to him over the years but I hope that they may recognise themselves if they have the opportunity of reading this.  There are nurses and phlebotomists who I cannot name.  I will list names that I can recall but also know that there are many members of staff who the public never meet, i.e. administrative staff who arrange appointments, letters etc., receptionists, cleaners, porters, etc. etc.  It has always amazed me how files are always in the hands of the Consultant even if one saw a different Consultant the day before and sometimes even at a different hospital.

The people who stand out in my memory are:-

Dr Donaldson and the staff at Dalgety Bay Health Centre.

Dr McLintock, Haematologist.

Dr Mitchell, Urologist.

Dr Munro, Plastic Surgeon.

Dr Fraser, Dermatologist & another male Dermatologist who attended him around May/June but I cannot recall his name.

Dr Francis, Cardiologist and his nurse Una  (who were so kind and compassionate when Dr Francis had to tell myself, my son and daughter that there was nothing more could be done for Bruce).

Ambulance drivers and Paramedics who are always so efficient and friendly.

Not forgetting the End of Life Palliative Care Team led by Marianne who worked extremely hard to arrange for Bruce to return home earlier than they had planned, even bringing equipment to our house herself. Bruce was so determined to get to his own home, his own bed and perhaps knew more than we did as to how long he had left.  The carers who attended to him during his final days (sorry I can’t remember all their names) were so professional and understanding and carried out their duties so efficiently.

Everyone who we met during all the years were so diligent in their work but treated my husband and myself as if we were the only people they had to attend to.

Many, many grateful thanks to all for your wonderful services which we most definitely appreciate.

We wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and Best Wishes for 2020.

Dear Appreciative Family Member

Thank you for sharing your experience at such a difficult time. We really value your feedback

The end of life palliative care team strive to facilitate the wishes of those we care for recognizing the importance of this for our patients and their families and to know that Bruce got his wish to die at home in his own bed is what we would aspire to fulfil.

I can see from your post that there was a real multi- disciplinary approach to your husband’s care over the years and the care, compassion and professionalism you experienced is wonderful to hear.

I will pass on your sentiments to the relevant teams who were involved in Bruce’s care.

We are pleased that we were able to support you all at what is a difficult time in one’s life and our thoughts are with you all.

Update posted by Appreciative family member (a relative)

Thank you for your response and I just hope as many of the staff concerned can get a minute out of their busy schedules to read of my appreciation.

It is such a pity that only the complaints get highlighted when I’m sure there are many more who appreciate the services than those who find something to complain about.

Dear Appreciative Family Member,

Many Thanks for your holistic appreciation of the services involved in caring for your late husband Bruce, as Michelle Williamson has stated, it has been a real multi- disciplinary approach to your husband’s care over the years and the care, compassion and professionalism you experienced is wonderful to hear. I would like to express my thanks to you from the Emergency Care Directorate - Cardiology, Dermatology and Haematology teams who had the privilege of being of service to you and your husband. It is really very satisfying and motivational for staff to hear when they have been able to provide comfort and a high standard of care to their patients. I will take great pleasure in passing on your feed back to those individuals and teams involved in your husbands journey.

It is much appreciated that you have taken the time to write about your experience under such sad circumstances. I hope you have many happy memories to comfort you at this time.

Best wishes to you and your family

Esther
