"Passed from pillar to post for treatment"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Dermatology Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Oral and Maxillofacial

(as a relative),

My father has been treated at various points over the past few years for skin cancer - originally his care was provided by the Dermatology team at RCHT. Over the past couple of years Dad seems to have been passed from pillar to post for treatment - sometimes Dermatology, sometimes Max Fax sometimes the Plastics team. As he requires ongoing treatment at each appointment he has been told that his case will 'be discussed at MDT' so that a treatment plan can be agreed - this has yet to happen! Dad was supposed to have a 6 month follow up appointment to check the skin cancer sites that had been treated and to assess the areas that still require treatment - it is now nearly mid December and he still hasn't been given an appointment. My Dad is reluctant to contact the hospital as he now has no idea which department is responsible for his care and is relying on the hospital to make contact with him. I have tried making contact for him (Dad is very hard of hearing so struggles on the phone and is reluctant to be seen making a fuss) but I am told that I can't be given information due to 'patient confidentiality'.

Don't get me wrong, when Dad has received treatment it has been carried out efficiently and the staff have been every thing we could wish for in terms of  professionalism pleasantness and understanding - however I am now very concerned that the disjointed care pathway he seems to have been placed on will have negative consequences for his future health as the skin cancers are not being assessed and potential treatments being delayed

Dear Zannadee,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I was saddened to read about your fathers experience of our services, leaving him confused as to which department will be treating him going forward. I can understand your frustrations and worry in your father not having a treatment plan and this is something we would like to look into for you. To this end, please feel free to contact Julie Knowles, Dermatology Lead Nurse on 01872 253254 or 01872 253089. Alternatively, if you would like to raise your concerns formally, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient and Family Experience team by calling 01872 252793 or emailing rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net.

I hope that we will be able to allay any fears that you have with regards to your fathers future health by looking into this for you. In the meantime, I will pass on your kind words to the team here in the Dermatology unit.

Thank you again for taking the time to highlight these issues to us, we hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,

Claire
