"I found myself always cold"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Cardiology (Wards 19, 24, 43a, 43b & 44a)

(as the patient),

I had a heart attack in October, I waited for many hours in the corridor of the accident and emergency where I was having episodes of angina but didn’t know.

Eventually moved through to a cubicle , several hours later  thinking I was now going to be seen properly with a doctor as I was now in a cubicle, well know I was now in another queue to see doctor. It was only when I was having a heart attack that I eventually seen a doctor , I could  see them through the gap in the curtain this doctor looking at me  shaking in pain with a heart heart attack,  I remember  thinking are you not going to do something , but know , it wasn’t till my wife went out and shouted is anyone going to help my husband he is having a heart attack.

My wife had been out of cubicle a couple of times to try and get a doctor because I felt the heart attack coming on , I don’t know if this was normal but I would not want to go back to that accident and emergency again if I had another heart attack , sorry to say you were too busy to notice my wife shouts or it wasn’t your job I don’t know ,

I then got moved up to ward think it was 61 stroke ward as they did not have a bed for me in ward 44. The staff were lovely well looked after well I was there for four days then moved to ward 44 mainly because I started getting angina again the same as I was having while waiting to see a doctor in Accident and emergency, I was moved at three in the morning.

I felt very cold in this ward, thought it must be because of the time of day. I asked for more blankets , I woke up a few hours later. Got washed had my breakfast. I seen the doctor constantly now consultant every morning a nice man always had a smile , very  informative , I was told I had to wait for an angiogram at the jubilee.

As the nights went on I found myself always cold, always asking for more blankets. I worked out they must be turning the heating of at about six o’clock , it started getting cold after that time , I haven’t got much else to do sitting there all day. Anyway this night time cold became the norm , I asked my wife to bring up thermal pyjamas and thermal underwear leggings , I couldn’t believe how cold I was getting every night , On the forth night in this word I got woke up with another patient at 1am and couldn’t get back to sleep with the cold , This for me became the last straw.

I got out of bed with all these extra clothes woolly hat I use when  Im out walking along the canal , I Went to the desk were all the staff were sitting with two fleeces on to stay warm they were  doing there paperwork , I said in a annoying way this is a joke I am freezing in that bed with all these clothes  on and still cold it’s not right , I explained if the heating wasn’t on tonight I would not be staying another night , the person put me onto to a person at end of phone who said he would look into it , Back to bed 15 minutes later I started taking off all these extra clothes it was very warm  all of a sudden , Got back to sleep all be a bit too warm now , you can’t make it up , Anyway that day I was moved to jubilee and got out the following day after angiogram and stent ,

I have to say I was looked after well with the staff in ward 61 and ward 44 in fact I would say they are brilliant working in those conditions , nothing was to much trouble apart from heating which was not there fault

I have been in before with heart attack in 2015 it was nothing like this

I don’t ever criticise normally to do with nhs but felt it was needed as this was a ward with serious ill patients, heating should be the norm ,

I hope this is taken seriously for those people responsible

Regards

Dear Pobra,

I was really disappointed to hear of your recent experience as a patient within ward 44 of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. I was equally concerned to hear of your experience of care within the accident and emergency department.

Please accept my apologies for the temperatures within ward 44. I was not aware of this issue and can advise that I have raised this with the responsible manager. I have also highlighted your comments regarding your stay within the accident and emergency department with the ED management team. I was however heartened to hear that your were happy with the standard of care you received within wards 61 and 44.

Thank you for taking the time to highlight your concerns and I would like to apologise that your experience was not as positive as we would expect it to be. I trust you are making a good recovery following your recent admission.

Yours sincerely,

John Stuart

Chief Nurse.

Thank you John for quick reply,

I must say John I more than a little surprised with your statement you didn’t realise about the problem heating the ward, you see while I was there we had a workman come into our wards about midday, We explained to him that it was during the nighttime hours is when it’s cold and when the heating is off, Still. another cold that night too after complaining and workman coming around didn’t seem to interested, maybe he new it was just for show, and complete waste of time, why don’t you visit the ward yourself, try around midnight, It was all everyone was talking about

As for the person looking at me and doing nothing, while I was having a heart attack I sure if you look back the Cameras for that evening, you may see them, now that would be an apology I would appreciate

your staff were very good in the wards, The accident and emergency staff totally different ball game, I know they are so busy, what I seen was your staff busy, but ignoring everything around them

I will refuse to go there if I have another heart attack, I have never felt so helpless sitting there and getting waves of angina,, The staff seem to not see you when you go to speak to them, they say something like I’ll get someone, never to see anyone

I finish to say it was disorganised chaos,

I have been before always wait a while that is to be expected, but I came in as a possible heart problem, it didn’t seem to matter, again look at you cameras you will see me walking up and down because I was feeling sick and in pain

I am 62 I cycle regularly I am pretty fit not a dotty old man

This is a sad day for me because I have been in your hospital several times over the last 8 or 9 years,

I would never complain about the nhs ever. I use you all the time with my Athritis but this service was so bad, I felt something had to be done and said

regards
