I was admitted as an emergency through A&E, suffering from Confusion/Delirium - I remember saying the previous evening that I was feeling very, very tired and wondered if I might have Flu, despite having had the Flu jab several weeks earlier. The next thing I remember is coming round in the High Dependency Ward - my husband had found me in the morning clearly confused and delirious, and had called for an ambulance which arrived very quickly and transferred me to Crosshouse - I have no memory of that journey, though I do remember some very vivid dreams/nightmares of events which had not actually happened. Despite CT + MRI scans and 2 Lumber Punctures there seemed to be doubt as to the cause of the Confusion, though HSV encephalitis was suggested. Treatment to cover all possibilities was started - antibiotics, aciclovir, and aspirin, in case of stroke. Whichever of these worked, I seemed to recover quite quickly, was transferred onto a surgical ward, then to another surgical ward and finally discharged by Dr Allen, 2 weeks after admission. Since coming home I have continued to improve and am almost back to my old self.
I consider the care I received was terrific, first of all in A&E (my husband says-I don't remember that bit), and especially on the High Dependency Ward - I don't remember any particular names I'm afraid, but all the staff were unfailingly kind and supportive - I felt very well looked after and was sorry to be moved on - this was my only slight criticism - being moved around was confusing and didn't help my confused state, but I understand the pressure on beds and the need to free up beds as patients become less dependent. Overall, I did feel that there was a bit of a lack of communication, and it wasn't always possible to speak to someone who knew what was happening, there again, I understand that with staff being under pressure all the time, there wasn't always the opportunity for them to know what was happening.
All in all, I was very impressed with the NHS, despite the picture that's painted - maybe I was just lucky, but I could not have received better treatment.
