"MRI Scan reporting"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus

(as a service user),

Recently attended the MRI, CT and PET unit at City hospital for a knee scan. Whilst the staff seemed friendly enough when it came to positioning my knee and providing adequate support for a 20-25 minute scan it was sadly lacking. I had a small blanket under my knee (because I asked as full extension is painful) my bare heel was on the slippery scanner bed with no support and no lateral support for my knee. The scanner was blowing cold air on my foot so I could hardly feel it. After being told I was doing very well, my leg twitched occasionally during the last scan which I could feel but do nothing about. The last scan had to be repeated, when I discussed this afterwards I was told it may well have been one of the pulse waves from the machine likely causing it. However when I got my results from my physio I was critiscised for 'moving' during the scan as it had been reported as that! Either it was the MRI itself, and I know that can happen, but if you have a proper support (sandbags etc.) for legs or any part of the body being scanned it would be less likely to happen due to muscle fatigue. I have had several scans and never moved on any of them. I just found it rather unnecessarily rude to report it in that way.

Thank you for sharing this and showing us the importance of being mindful of how things are described in notes and reporting. I’m glad you found the staff helpful and sympathetic, but I’m very sorry that it appears your experience having your MRI was not reflected in the way your scan was reported. You have given us something to think about to improve things for future patients, and I have shared your feedback with the team to help with this.

Kind regards
