"Amazing urostomy care from specialist nurses"

I had my bladder removed 1 month ago today due to a very painful bladder syndrome and needing the loo all of the time which was having a massive detrimental affect on my life, both personal and professional. 

I met with the stoma nurses (Sarah, Kate and Jenny and HCA Lou) a few times before my surgery to discuss what it would involve and my concerns. Also, how my other health conditions may impact on my inpatient stay following surgery but also my ongoing management of my stoma. They offered to meet with myself, myself and partner, and also other healthcare professionals involved in my care which I felt well and above what they are required to offer. This was also the first time that I was able to coordinate health professionals from different aspects of my life to help them all understand what was going on for me. 

Day 1 post surgery and they took it at my pace, about seeing my new stoma and wounds but also learning to take care of it myself. They are always positive, upbeat, optimistic and always ready to offer reassurance, a cup of tea, tissues to mop up tears and a cup of tea (my first in years!!!). 

Since the operation and being home, they have always been just a quick phone call away and can usually visit them the same day or next day to try and resolve problems and worries. I have turned up to their office in floods of tears completely overwhelmed a few times now, but have always left positive and smiling and giggling. 

They are a truly fantastic team and whilst I know that I have a long way to go yet, they have helped me get further than I expected this quickly and this well. They are a credit to the NHS and a wonderful, friendly team.
