"Maternity Triage"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as a service user),

I phoned maternity triage to get advice because my wife is 33 weeks pregnant and felt her heart was racing. Due to previous cardic history this made her think something wasnt right. The lovely lady asked if my wife would phone herself as there was questions she needed to ask her. When my wife phoned back the shift had changed over and nothing was passed on about my phone call. She got a patronising nurse who made her feel like they really didn't care. She was told to take her smart watch off that was telling her what her heart rate was, get a good night sleep and just relax. There was nothing to worry about even though her heart rate hadn't been below 100 in 3 days and on 1 day it had gone as high as 240 accompanied by increased fetal movement.

Dear Mummytobe2020

It is lovely to read the positive feedback about your first call to maternity triage but I was sorry to read about the very different experience with the second staff member who came across as dismissive and uncaring with her advice. I can understand your anxiety especially with your wife’s previous history. This is certainly not how we expect our staff to conduct themselves. I hope that your wife has been reviewed and that everything has settled and you both feel more reassured.

I will share your comments with the Senior Sister for triage who will discuss with the team the impact their manner has had. I know she will ask me to reassure you that should your wife have any future worries she must contact the team who will happily invite her in for a check up.

If you would like to discuss your concerns in more detail I can be contacted on 01324567484 or by email at gailbell@nhs.net.

I hope the remainder of the pregnancy is problem free and you both enjoy the time leading up to becoming new parents.

Kind regards

Gail
