"My father's experience of MAC and ward"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Care of the Elderly (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

My father has been in hospital for over 4 weeks and is being discharged to a nursing home. Before we move onto the next chapter with Dad's care, I feel the need to provide some feedback.

The MAC (Meaningful Activity Club) is amazing and the staff in there are absolutely fantastic. My Dad's stay in hospital would not have been so bearable had it not been for the MAC and the girls in there. They are all so nice and so dedicated to doing a good job; they always make the patients and the patients' families best interests the priority.

I cannot thank the MAC girls enough !!!

Dad was also on Ward 10 which I felt was very understaffed.

My Dad fell on two occasions, despite being deemed 'high risk of fall', because he was left unattended. I did try to be very understanding as the few nurses that are on shift cannot be everywhere at once. My understanding waned however a result of the behaviour of several of the nurses. No communication / updates unless you pushed. No general conversation. No obvious real caring in my opinion. One in particular was downright rude. There were a couple who were helpful and more approachable; unfortunately these were the exception.

I felt the clinical support workers in the ward were much more attentive. One girl who was there made such a difference. When she was not there, it was like my dad and other patients I saw were very much on their own. Couple of the nightshift support workers also very nice and certainly made it less worrying to leave Dad when they were there.

Dear elgw

Thank you for taking time to post your comment on Patient Opinion.

I am very pleased to read your comments on MAC and that the staff were fantastic, dedicated to their patients and their families ensuring their best interests were their priority.

I will ensure these lovely comments are shared with the MAC team.

I am concerned about your findings of ward 10 particularly staff who were downright rude. So I can explore and discuss your findings more with you I would be grateful if you could contact our Patients Affairs team on 01698 366558.

Thanks again for your comments and I hope your father has settled well into his nursing home.

Kind regards

Janice
